In the beginning of XX century, before the October Revolution, it was not as hard for young girls and women to marry successfully as it is in the contemporary society. But what has changed after the revolution? Repressions began, wiping out whole classes of people (officers, aristocrats, scientists, doctors, businessmen), who were either shot or forced to leave the country. Many were exiled for lifetime to Siberia. The authorities consisted of people from the lowest layers of society - workers and peasants. Religion was declared "opium for the people". Many churches were destroyed, and so were moral values. Alcoholism and anarchy began to flourish.
During the civil war, which continued for 2 years, many Russian men perished. After the war the hungry years began, when entire families died from hunger. In the 30s many families were left without breadwinners. Russian brides raised children themselves. Then in 1941 the World War II, which took away more than 20 million lives, broke out. The majority of those killed there were, of course, male soldiers and officers. Almost every family in Russia had lost a father, a son or a brother. An entire generation of children was brought up without fathers. Therefore many boys were spoiled and protected by their mothers.
When did the number of men begin to fall? The demographic unbalance in Russia probably occurred after the war of 1941-1945. Women began to predominate in the country not only in quantity, they also became stronger and more tough both in the moral and in the physical aspect. At that time people did not even realize that Russia would experience the aftermath of the war for a long time.
Now, in XXI century, Russian brides still recall that war, which took away the lives of many men. Moreover, the Stalinist repressions continued for several years after the war. They took away thousands of human lives. There were also the consequences of wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan. So, since the beginning of XX century and until now, Russian fellows perished in numerous wars and repessions and still perish in Chechnia.
